Curiosity (and free coffee) lured people to my show featuring images of a condemned Mental Hospital
This show was really an experiment to see how the public would receive pictures of a subject that is not necessarily "beautiful". The 12 pictures of the Medfield State Hospital on display might best be described as eerie and lonesome. The bright and cheery colors peeling and crumbling off walls and doors was appealing to me. Seeing rooms cluttered with paperwork and files that once served a purpose piqued my curiosity. I really wanted to catch the juxtaposition between common areas brightly-lit from big South-facing windows and the darkness and isolation of the resident rooms nearby. My hope was to have an audience think about how we have, and continue to, treat mental illness in our country.
I am thankful for the well-received press coverage and audience feedback so far.
